Professor, University of Sydney

Professor Whelan received his PhD from the University of British Columbia in 2003. He has established a research program that provides insight into how the socio-economic constraints that individuals and households face translate into social outcomes. His research has examined labour market outcomes associated with the receipt of housing assistance, housing tenure and geographic mobility, housing outcomes of elderly Australians, and the financing of first home purchase. More recently, he has received funding from the Australian Research Council and the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) to consider issues around housing, inequality and homelessness.
